The Psychology of All-Black-Everything

It's no secret that the fashion industry loves black. From a Rick Owens-clad crowd outside Palais de Tokyo to the flock of Vogue Paris editors led by Emmanuelle Alt in the Tuileries, fashion's love affair with all-black-everything is a real documented thing - and it goes way beyond simple utility and functionality.

Yes, it goes with everything, but according to color psychology, black represents authority, power, elegance, discipline and mystery and is a way to communicate an authoritative image or protect one's emotions from external stress. Is it any wonder it's a fashion week favorite?

In considering that creatives can be particularly vulnerable, and the fashion industry is not easy on mental health due to its emphasis on perfectionism, strained resources and ego-driven forces, armour-like black is perhaps the only color that makes one feel safe.

Do you wear black? What drives you to? Tell us in the comments.

“I dedicate this show to the youth of today, to them having the courage to scream for what they believe in”, Burberry’s new creative lead Riccardo Tisci has said of his FW19 collection. Perhaps no look echoed the sentiment as much as this one, demonstrating our generation’s penchant for subversion, our staunch defence against convention and anger at the injustices we feel we’ve inherited, all at once. #Burberry #LFW

“It’s become trendy to dump on New York Fashion Week. London gets away with being “creative”, Milan is respected for its old-school luxury, and well, Paris is Paris, but I notice people reserve a bit of undue vitriol for New York. And yet, NYC’s seemingly random group of presenters represent the polish and ambition of the city, balanced with the come-one, come-all philosophy of the new world in general. And while those welcoming values are becoming threatened at the moment, they’re still very much alive in the hearts of most Americans.” Read a review of our Top 5 NYFW FW19 collections via the link in bio.

Love is when you get each other’s aesthetic choices. Case in point: former husband Marc Anthony liked Jennifer to dress more classic and conservative. And that was never going to work. If they don’t get your style, they don’t get you. #fashionpsychology #valentinesday

When image recognition advances, and people start to better understand fashion psychology, etailers will be able to recommend A-line silhouettes such as those seen at @brandonmaxwell FW19 to those who are aligned with this feminine and exuberant feature.

Beautiful details from Sies Marjan AW19: apart from creating some of the most mood-boosting colors and details on the current market, @siesmarjan designer Sander Lak believes in diversity and respect: “We have 30 employees of all ages and nationalities, who are paid the way they should be paid, who have a work-life balance,” he told Glamour.com. The fashion industry can be harsh and unforgiving, so I’m really proud of our own little world, our family.”

The enduring appeal of the bejewelled mask on the runway shows no sign of waning, making an appearance this NYFW at @area. Imagine what would impel you to wear such a piece: a strong desire to keep separate and partially conceal from others, to demonstrate out-of-the-box thinking, a revolutionary and proud spirit. “What do I wear when I’m not into color, but want to express joy?” was a recent stories question from a reader. The answer: pieces rich in texture and structural detail. They provide enough excitement and stimulation for the eye, without taking away from the calm confidence that black provides for its devotees. (Pictured: @noirkeininomiya AW15)
